2013年にリーダーの常田大希が立ち上げたプロジェクト、
Mrs.Vinci（ミセス・ヴィンチ）、
それを原型としたSrv.Vinci（サーヴァ・ヴィンチ）を前身とする。
2017年にKing Gnuへ改名。
バンド名は、由来である“Gnu＝ヌー”が、春から少しずつ合流して
やがて巨大な群れになる習性を持っており、
自分たちも老若男女を巻き込み
大きな群れになりたいという思いから名づけられた。
音楽面においてはオルタナティヴ・ロックのみならず
ジャズやヒップホップ、クラシックなど
幅広いジャンルの要素を取り入れながら、
歌謡曲然とした親しみやすいメロディーや
日本語による歌詞を乗せることを重視しており、
「J-POPをやる」ということがKing Gnuの
大きなコンセプトの一つとなっている。
